The History of Momma Goldberg's
Momma Goldberg's opened in 1976 in Auburn, a college town in Southeastern Alabama. The original location still operates on the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Donahue Drive, making it the oldest independently-owned restaurant in the city.

For over 30 years Momma Goldberg's has proven to be a successful player in the Fast Casual dining market. New and returning customers enjoy our food and friendly atmosphere. Our "old school" deli gives customers the opportunity to design their own sandwiches and salads or to order from our delicious specialty menu. However they're ordered, our sandwiches, soups, and salads are made with only fresh, high-quality ingredients.

Company Founder
Don DeMent built Momma Goldberg's upon a foundation of honesty and hard work. By drawing from past experiences and sensing future trends, the business continues to grow and thrive.

Don and his three siblings were raised in Shelby County Alabama by loving parents. Jack DeMent was a coal miner and Blanch was a sewing instructor. Their strong work ethic encouraged their children to strive for success. Don went on to graduate from Auburn University in 1963 and worked in the competitive Birmingham Alabama retail clothing business at the beginning of his career.

While running his own men's clothing store in Auburn Alabama, Don noticed the lack of variety in local food establishments. At the time, most Auburn restaurants were the sit-down, country cooking type. He felt that college students and residents would enjoy a new choice in cuisine. Momma Goldberg's was created as a result.

Philosophy
The Golden Rule is Momma Goldberg's business creed: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It is crucial to conduct business with honesty, open-mindedness, and respect. This includes relationships with our customers, vendors, co-workers, and community. Don DeMent says, "listening to customers, vendors, fellow employees, and friends formed the structure of Momma Goldberg's that has led to our success."

Origin of the Name
"Momma Goldberg" is not the name of Don DeMent's grandmother. The restaurant was actually named for the mother of a hard working colleague who became a mentor to Don in his early professional life. "Mama Goldberg" was a friendly, honest, person with lots of drive. She exhibited the qualities Don placed in his own business model.
"Mama" was changed to "Momma" when Don's brother Mike, offered to make a sign for the building. Although the name was spelled differently, the sign looked great. The little error has become part of the Momma Goldberg's culture.

Signature Items
Our most famous sandwich is the Momma's Love. It's a delicious combination of roast beef, ham, smoked turkey, muenster cheese, lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo, and Momma's Dressing on a seeded, steamed bun. Don spent hundreds of hours perfecting our Signature Sandwich, and as a result the Momma's Love accounts for approximately 65% of our food sales.

Another famous seller is our Nachos. The recipe for this item was created by two Auburn University students who worked at the original Momma Goldberg's deli. Instead of making regular nachos, the young men used Doritos and a Pepper Jack cheese blend. At first the students only served their new recipe to friends who frequented the restaurant. Once the word got out, however, a "nacho craze" began. The Nachos became so popular that Don DeMent decided to make them a permanent part of the menu.

Our Turkey Delite accounts for about 25% of food sales. It offers just the right mix of turkey, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayonnaise, and Momma's Dressing on a wheat bun. Steaming enhances the flavor of this popular item.
